Blue Apple Theatre was founded in 2005 to use the skills and enhanced confidence gained through performing on stage as an opportunity for raising the ceiling of expectation for people with learning disabilities. We aim to help our members achieve their social, personal and theatrical potential through the challenge of appearing on stage in public performance. We are dependent on the excellent work of our many volunteers to achieve this.

Main Company

The Main Company of over 30 able and learning-disabled adults have fun together discovering and developing skills while devising and creating two major productions a year for performance to the general public.  We learn from each others’ gifts and everyone is equally valued and included.

We aim for high quality productions which include learning disabled and non-disabled artists and we perform to the public. We believe creating inclusive theatre is important in building bridges of understanding and respect between different community groups.

Apple Core

The Apple Core is Blue Apple’s award-winning performance skills training programme. A small group of auditioned, learning disabled members conduct workshops and tour dance performances and commissioned, issue-based plays designed to improve understanding – and address public misconceptions – of learning disability within the wider community.

Film

Blue Apple's actors work with the filmmaker William Jessop to create powerful, issue-based short films from the point of view of people with learning disability. Films including Paul's Story about disability hate crime, and Freddie's Story about going to hospital, are currently used in training across the country.

Will has also created DVDs of various Blue Apple Theatre productions including Hamlet, Living Without Fear and The Government Inspector.

For DVDs, please contact jane@blueappletheatre.com.

Dance

Blue Apple Theatre runs a thriving dance programme with mid-week sessions for all abilities that build to termly performances and are designed to be a fun and creative means of developing fitness and self-expression.

Volunteer!

Blue Apple Theatre was recently awarded the 1000th Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. We couldn't exist without the tireless, joyous commitment of our many volunteers. If you think you might like to work with our wonderful actors, please email admin@blueappletheatre.com.

Blue Apple also offers work experience for people of all abilities in our office, front-of-house and backstage.
